PSN Challenge, feedback thread

Postby LegionX on Sun Mar 07, 2010 5:44 pm

OK.. so yesterday I ran a bit of a test comp for this PSN Challenge concept I came up with.

brief summary for those that missed it, Its a comp where (provided it continues) it will always be put up for registrations as "PSN Challenge" but the specific game the comp will be run on will not be announced until signups are already closed. All games will be chosen from any downloadable game on the Playstation Network. The idea was to keep things mixed up a bit and give people a chance to win a game where its likely nobody has practiced or is already at expert at.

At the March 6th LAN we had 9 sign ups, although a couple pulled out due to clashes mid comp. The game that was played this time was Blast Factor (video footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxIztiQgKRw) and the comp was won by Hybrid.

Now that Blast Factor has been used, that specific game will never again be used as a PSN Challenge game, the idea is for it to always be something different.

So, after all of that, I'm looking for feedback, from those that were in it, and those that werent... Did it work? Do you think its a stupid idea? Should it run again, be modified, be retired?

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated, I know so far the one bit of feedback gotten was that it may work as a multiple game comp like our fighting game series.

Please let me know what you think :-)

I think it worked...even though I didn't actually go in due to the fact that I had to leave early. I think it should be held during the UFC so that when players finish their match they can play PSN challenge instead of sitting there...watching...eg. Me.
w00t...That's it, that's my sig, "w00t", what were you expecting? Like a fancy pic or somethin'?

Just as an update, for those that weren't at the last LAN I ran the PSN Challenge again

This time the game that ended up being used was Super Rub A Dub

As you can see, generally this comp uses simplistic quick little games as a bit of variety. Entry numbers were low (I think 5 or 6 people) however I will run it once more at the May event (will be a different random game) as numbers were down for all console comps last lan, so I'm not quite ready to proclaim the format a failure ;-)

may as well update again

I ran the PSN Challenge again at the May LAN just passed

This time the game used was Go Puzzle, a 3 puzzle games in one pack, The 2nd game, Aquatica was used.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSA0_goWac8

We had 6 entrys again, and have now had 3 seperate winners from these comps, which is pretty much what I was looking for in the first place, an unpredictable comp where nobody has an advantage at the start.

Will probably continue this at the August LAN, but it wont be at Reloaded

August LAN update

This time the game used was 3 on 3 NHL Arcade

This time there were 8 entrants, hopefully they found it a fun diversion.

Gotta say the mini goalies were hilarious at times :-)
