LAN Nubie question?

Postby Warlock on Mon Mar 01, 2010 12:04 pm

As it’s been quite some time since I've gone to one of these events. I’m tiring to get everything preinstalled before I get there.
So for I’ve got:
Dota
COD2
COD4
Modern Warfare 2

I don’t play Counter suck unless I really have no other chose. :P

Is there anything else I should be looking for? :?:
I want to die while asleep like my grandfather.
Not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car.

Piggybacking on this thread... me and a couple of friends will be attending this weekend for the first time.

One thing I'm wondering is about any sort of internet access there - most of my games are on Steam and most of them don't work in offline mode for obvious reasons. Will there be some sort of provision for logging onto Steam? I read a while ago that internet access was provided for WoW players at a previous event as well - is this still the case? I can just imagine hordes of people trying to access sites for patches and general browsing in between games... I'm just having trouble imagining what sort of insane internet connection would be required to service ~200 gamers... :?

I've been playing and enjoying a bit of BF:BC2 lately. I've just recently read that it doesn't support LAN play. I guess that rules out that game for this weekend...?

Also, are there many servers set up that ummm let people play who may have a modified exe simply to avoid having to insert their disc to play? >_> If this is a taboo subject I deeply apologise in advance.

full net access for steam.. yeah no dedicated servers to the general public yet...

Our uber network admin makes sure punters donpt go nuts but it is fast enough for everyone.. generally most steam games don't have updates over night but it can happen

Gday, welcome to the forums :)
Internet is provided, but it isnt extremely fast, because as you stated, there are ~200 gamers accessing it.... it is still more than fine to look at facebook/google etc but I would not recommend playing online games on it.
Steam logs on fine, but it is recommended that you update all of your games before leaving for the lan in the morning.
I myself have been playing BF:BC2... and I am not sure whether it will be at the lan, although I am sure that someone will find a way around the big.
Also, the servers set up generally allow customised .exe's to play the game without a dvd, as we are all a bit lazy ;)

Anyway, hope you have a good lan, I always do.

Cheers,
Pickles

Yes we provide internet access at the event. this is shared by steam and has various MMOs, including wow, aion and guildwars available for online access. Please note it is not designed to play other games online.

Its unlikely Bad company 2 will feature at this event due to server and lan issues (similar to modern warfare 2). There'll be other servers available on the day for a variety of games.

I'm going to save opening a new thread as this is also net related. I'll be attending my first Valhalla (in what feels like forever) this weekend. I wanted to show some friends the SC2 campaign, however it requires you to log in (if you want achievements and stuff). Will there be access to log into battle.net? I don't play on playing online as I don't want it to drop. But it would be nice to show the game, that's also the only way people can play custom games together (gg lan support).
